Join us for the opening reception for "Surfacing," a contemporary textile exhibition featuring the work of Wisconsin artists Alison Gates, Patricia Filzen, and Heidi Parkes!

The exhibition runs from Friday, September 6th - Saturday, September 28th. The exhibition reception is on Sept. 6th from 5 - 8pm, with an artist talk planned at 6:30pm.

Alison Gates is an Appleton resident and Professor of Art and Women's & Gender Studies at UW-Green Bay. She works primarily in assemblage sculpture and stitched or knitted/knotted textiles with emotional/political content.

Patricia Filzen is also an Appleton resident. Often working in series, she is extremely process orientated and creatively repurposes textiles, threads, and objects into new fibers. She elevates what may be seen as discarded materials into complex fabrics.

Heidi Parkes is a Milwaukee resident who approaches her quilting with an improvisational style: integrating repurposed scavenged textiles from various contexts, "drawing" with stitchery and finding inspiration from abstract painters.

Two corresponding events are planned along with this exhibition: a "Visual Mending Workshop" run by Heidi Parkes on Saturday, September 7th, and a lecture by Marti Matyska about the history of the handkerchief called "A Blast from the Past!" on Saturday, September 28th. Information about Heidi's workshop can be found here, including how to register: The handkerchief lecture is free, and will start at 6:30pm.

This exhibition has been curated by Cristian Andersson of Matchbook Studio LLC.
